HOGAN SUPREME
Tullamore's Margaret Hogan rolled back the years and won the Irish Ladies Strokeplay championship on the links at Portmarnock today. The Co. Offaly legend fired fourteen under par 148 for the three rounds and won the championship for the first time in 27 years, having taken three in a row from 1977 - 1979. In the meantime, she has been runner-up in the championship on no fewer than six occasions. Margaret Hogan was chased home by the other prolific gatherer of Irish titles, Geraldine Ward of the home club. 2003 and 2004 champion, Geraldine had hand surgery in May this year but returned 153 in breezy conditions to finish in the top two for the fourth straight year. Three times Irish matchplay queen, Margaret Hogan has now won Irish titles in four different decades.(posted July 10, 2006)
MURPHY CREATES HISTORY
Ray Murphy won his second Irish Strokeplay championship on the weekend. He is the first man in 30 years (and the second ever) to win the Irish Strokeplay and Matchplay in the same calendar year. He is only the second player (after Sean Downes) to win multiple Irish Strokeplay and Matchplay championships. His two main rivals, 36 hole leader John Walsh (-24 playing the last) and 2003 champion William Buckley Junior (-23 with a hole to play after bogeying the 53rd hole) visited water around the final green to hand Ray (in the clubhouse on -25 for three rounds) the laurels.(posted July 3, 2006)
