WORLD INTERCLUB LEAGUE ROUND 1 WRAP UP.
Round 1 of the World Interclub League teed off this weekend with great excitement and a strong showing from many of the newcomers to the competition.
In the Champions Division, Canberra International A lead the way setting the lowest score and defeating highly favoured Sant Cebria from Catalonia, 193-201.
Corinda from Brisbane in Australia defeated reigning Champions, NPPV from the Netherlands whilst Southern Cross A defeated La Rosaleda of the Canary Islands.
Top performances for the weekend included 193 by Canberra International A as the best team score.
Stewart Genge of the Canberra based club Southern Cross A shot the lowest score, equalled by James Haining of Corinda in Brisbane, whilst Kim Magann and Wayhul Kamal of Canberra International shot a strong 44 as a pair.
The best round by a lady came from NPPV's Herma Olthuis who came in with a 54.
But the best performances of the weekend did not all come from the Champions division with Bonnie Creech and Eunice Kirk of the Division II team, Canberra Cavaliers, combining well to register the lowest score by a ladies pair with a 52.
It was a record breaking weekend with 4 WIL competition records broken as well as 9 WIL National records.
The first weekend was not just about great scores.
It brought players from all around the world together into one family who all share the excitement of playing in this competition and have many stories to tell.
In Vancouver, Canada, the Stanley Park Eagles Nest team competed with a host of support people who followed the team around the course and there were prizes for nearest the pin, furthest from the pin and even random draw prizes for the support crew.
In Denmark, Stephen Carden reported that there was also great excitement - and some great play ...Stephen reported that "Ronnie Vienberg hit his tee shot out of bounds, followed up with his next tee shot into a bunker and then put the ball into the hole - from the 8ft deep bunker for a miraculous recovery and a 4, luckily his father took par and they stayed on track for a well hit 50 in their debut international outing."
The Horsholm players are now hungry for as much international competition as they can find.
In Canberra, the Cavaliers player Neidre O'Connor made her international debut with a hole in one with her first shot of the day!
In Geelong, the Balyang Balyroos had a player who is 92 years old, Ivy Moller - Ivy scored a 59!
Interestingly Ivy is only just the oldest player in the competition with Stanley Park player Charlie bush, who played as a reserve this weekend, aged 91.
All around the world, there are stories to be shared from this great weekend of Pitch and Putt, and names that were unknown in Pitch and Putt before have now become etched into the history books of the sport internationally.
Whilst some teams walked away from the weekend with the 2 points for a win, everyone who took part is a winner, and so is Pitch and Putt.
