CATALAN LADIES STROKEPLAY CHAMPIONSHIPS
Pilar Montero takes the Catalan Ladies Championship 2009
Organized by the Federació Catalana de Pitch & Putt, the 2009 Catalan Ladies Championship was played on Saturday 30 May at La Garriga. The championship attracted a strong field of 77 players representing many Catalan clubs.
The championship was contested over 36 holes. Mercedes Marco, from Vendrell, led after the opening round on 53 strokes, followed by Isabel Rodriguez (Sant Jaume) with 54 and Pilar Montero of Vallromanes on 55.
The second round was very close and after 36 holes there was a tie on 115 between Mercedes Marco and Pilar Montero. A sudden death play-off was required. They halved the first. On the second extra hole Pilar Montero pitched almost out of bounds. Mercedes' tee shot left the ball a few metres from the hole. With an almost incredible shot, Pilar holed for a two. Mercedes had the birdie opportunity to extend the play-off but the ball stayed out. Pilar takes the title for the second consecutive year and again with an extraordinary stroke, just as in 2008 at Manresa where she also clinched victory with a fantastic final shot.
Pilar Montero had also demonstrated her high level of play the week before, winning the women's classification of the Beijing Open (China). With this victory Pilar reaches a stunning nine wins in the Ladies Championship of Catalonia. Champion every year from 1997 to 2003, she has now won the last two editions. 2004 and 2005 winner, Mercedes Marco was so close to a third victory.
