BPPA STROKEPLAY CHAMPIONSHIPS
ANTHONY O'BRIEN CROWNED BRITISH CHAMPION
The BPPA hosted their annual British Strokeplay Championship last weekend at the lovely Centenary Park course in London's Harrow. A very challenging layout was created to ensure a tough assignment for everyone. The weather was perfect.
Darragh Mooney, Course Manager, and the Harrow Council maintenance staff ensured that the course was in first class condition. Players from various areas including Abbotsley, Cambridgeshire, Bath and Dagenham, Essex produced some excellent results.
Doreen Powell from Abbotsley won the British Ladies Championship over 36 holes and the British Senior Championship over 36 holes went to Dagenham's Ron Cope.
The Men’s Championship was decided after the top 16 after 36 holes completed a final 18. Anthony O’Brien was favourite following opening rounds of 52 and 58, which included a hole in one and he went on to score another 52 in the final round to become British Champion on even par for the three rounds.
Runner-up was Centenary’s Savio Fernandes, who scored six over, and third was Steve Deeble of Dagenham, on 11 over.
The high scoring reflected the difficulties faced by everyone who contested this wonderful flagship event.
The British Junior Championship, over 18 holes, was won by 15-year old Harry Lambert from Dagenham.
Anthony O’Brien and father and son Steve and John Deeble, will represent Great Britain in the World Pitch & Putt Championships to be held in Holland in October.
