DAMIEN FLEMING WINS AT DEERPARK

A final round of 50 clinched a second Irish Open in three years for Deerpark's own Damien Fleming. The young Killarney NEC member posted a 54 hole aggregate of 23 under par 139 to win by a single shot from Corkmen Paudie O'Sullivan and Frank Dineen, the holder of the Irish Open title. O'Sullivan closed with a 48 for 140 and second slot on the countback. Glenville's Derek Courtney fired a fabulous final round of 12 under par 42 to take fourth place on 141. John Walsh scored 47 on Sunday to finish fifth on 143, just ahead of Courtney's fellow Dubliner John Crangle. Top non Irish player was Amador Rodriguez (Catalonia) on 155. Tracey McGrath maintained her excellent form wih a last 18 52 for an eight under par aggregate of 154. That gave the Offaly player victory in the ladies open by six shots from Holland's Esther de Schiffart. Another Offaly player, the legendary Margaret Hogan, finished fourth on 162. Margaret was pipped for third by Martha O'Brien (Lakeside), who shot a second successive 51 on Sunday to also finish on level par.
