MARCAL MORE WINS IN CATALONIA

A superb closing round of 48 gave 2008 champion Marçal More a second Catalan Open title. More's six under par closing effort on a very difficult Mas Pages course gave him a 54 hole total of 156 and a two shot victory over Ireland's John Crangle, John Crangle fired a final round of 53 to finish three shots clear of his fellow countryman William Buckley. Buckley has a great affinity with the Catalan Open having been the inaugural winner in 2004 and his 55 final round gave him third spot on the tiebreaker. Leader heading into Sunday's final round was Paco Salido on six under par 102. Salido faded into fourth place with a final 18 of 59. A notable fifth place finisher was legendary Catalan coach Xavi Ponsdemenench. Xavi matched Marçal More's 48 on Sunday to leap 32 places in the ranking. That 48 won a countback on even par 162 with three other players, holder Marc Garcia, joint first round leader (on 50) Marc Fortuny and Chris Gallagher (Ireland). Abby Nachson won the women's event on a steady 173 aggregate, well ahead of Dutch player Esther de Schiffart.
