AUSTRALIAN MATCHPLAY OPEN @ Terrey Hills 2007 - results

Australian Matchplay Championship Results.

The inaugural Australian Matchplay Championship was held at the immaculate Terrey Hills Par 3 course over three days with a compact international field that featured some of the best international pitch and putt players in the world.

With a gruelling 8 rounds to be played and temperatures in the high 20's - it was always going to be a true test of mental and physical toughness to win the event.
After the pool matches, three of the four pools were led by Irishmen, with Australia's James Rogerson taking the other pool.
After the quarter final matches , all four positions in the semis went to the Irish and after two great semi finals, Alan Hanlon and James Carroll emerged - a final encounter awaited them.
The crowd were treated to some great Pitch and Putt, Carroll ahead by one at the turn.
By the time they stood at the 17th tee, Carroll was two up.
Carroll's tee shot was safely onto the green whilst Hanlon's shot feel short. Needing to chip it in to keep in the game, Hanlon shot missed the mark and he conceded the hole and match. Carroll raised his arms aloft to celebrate a tremendous victory and became the first player to win the Australian Matchplay Championship and a leg of the Triple Crown.

In the Ladies Championship, the semi finals saw a multi national group with women from Australia, France, Ireland and Holland taking the four places.
As expected Liz Quinn and Esther Newsum marched towards the final where Quinn held a slender lead at the half and this was to be the winning margin at the end of the round. Both Esther and Liz had delighted the crowd with their superb play in the final and were great ambassadors for the sport at this first major international competition in Australia.

In the B division finals, Dutch born Sydneysider, Per van Dujin defeated English born Frenchman Dennis Hill for the title whilst Adelaide's Christa Daley took the honours in her battle with Nathalie Goujon for the ladies B division title.
The competitions youngest player, 16 year old Rhys Peters from Adelaide was delighted to make it through to the Top 16 amongst such illustrious company, and the oldest player, 85 year old Tom Drury of Canberra won 3rd place in the B division.

The first Australian Matchplay Championship was a tremendous success with the players applauding the Terrey Hills course as one of the world's finest Pitch and Putt courses.
